Self-Awareness is a Super Power!

  • By Mike Phillips
  • In The Leadership Toolkit

Let’s talk about having super powers! The super power of self-awareness is at the forefront of the discussion. In a recent super powerful episode of The Leadership Toolkit podcast, our host, Mike Phillips, sits down with the exceptional Scott Goyette, founder of ‘Go Love Now,’ a distinguished transformational coach, revered leadership and organizational consultant, and esteemed business professor. The conversation and insight that was shared was phenomenal. Scott pointed out the profound aspects of effective leadership, self-awareness, and fostering growth within yourself and your team.

Self-awareness facilitates a deeper understanding of personal values, beliefs, and aspirations.

First, we got into the topic of awareness. Awareness or Self-awareness is often considered the cornerstone of personal development. Being self-aware encapsulates the conscious knowledge of one’s character, feelings, motives, and desires. Self-awareness facilitates a deeper understanding of personal values, beliefs, and aspirations, fostering a heightened sense of authenticity and purpose. By cultivating this profound level of self-understanding, individuals can make informed choices aligned with their true selves. By leaders doing this it leads to improved decision-making, emotional regulation, and interpersonal relationships. Self-awareness serves as a catalyst for growth. Self aware leaders encourage individuals to acknowledge their areas for development and embark on a journey of continuous self-improvement. By being aware and constantly growing it gives us a more meaningful and fulfilling existence.

The leaders that bring the most value lead by example.

During the conversation, Mike and Scott explore the essence of leading by example. I LOVE THIS TOPIC! Scott embodies this trait. Leading by example is a powerful strategy that transcends words and commands, embodying the essence of genuine leadership. It involves setting a standard of behavior and work ethic that inspires and motivates others to follow suit. A leader who leads by example demonstrates their values and character through their actions. This helps to foster trust, respect, and admiration within the team. By consistently displaying integrity, dedication, and perseverance, they instill these qualities in their subordinates, creating a culture of accountability and excellence.

Self-aware, action-taking leaders prioritize transparency and open communication, encouraging a sense of collaboration and unity among their team members. They are not afraid to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty, showing that no task is beneath them and that hard work is integral to success. Moreover, they actively promote a healthy work-life balance, recognizing the importance of personal well-being for overall productivity and morale. Through their unwavering commitment and ethical conduct, leaders who lead by example inspire others to reach their full potential and create a positive ripple effect within the organization.

Be kind to yourself and others.

Scott regularly refers back to the often underestimated power of empathy and kindness in the realm of leadership. He shares invaluable strategies and practices for cultivating empathy and kindness as integral components of effective leadership, highlighting how a compassionate approach can forge meaningful connections, and create a positive, nurturing environment.

We really got into some great examples and actionable items in working on yourself first to grow and expand into others on your team. Empower yourself with the essential tools and insights needed to unlock your leadership potential and propel your team toward unparalleled success and fulfillment.
