Authenticity Builds Trust

  • By Mike Phillips
  • In The Leadership Toolkit

Authenticity in leadership refers to the genuine, transparent, and consistent expression of a leader’s values, beliefs, and emotions. An authentic leader is not afraid to show vulnerability and acknowledge their mistakes. When they do this it fosters an environment where employees feel comfortable doing the same. This authenticity builds a strong sense of trust and mutual respect, crucial for creating a motivated and engaged team.

Another amazing episode of “The Leadership Toolkit!” Mike had a special guest, Ben Cosh, an expert in leadership and organizational development. Ben has an impressive 15+ year track record of leadership excellence. He has the profound ability to inspire and drive people toward achieving remarkable results. We’ll talk about the definition of leadership and then explore how authenticity in leadership builds trust. We also dive into effective communication, and the power to drill down and focus on what’s most important.

One of my favorite points that Ben stated was, “Wherever you normally sit on things, that’s good, that’s you, be that!”

“You find where you are and BE THAT!” ~ Ben Cosh

Authentic leadership is a powerful and impactful approach to leading others. It revolves around being true to oneself, demonstrating genuine and transparent behavior, and fostering meaningful connections with those being led. An authentic leader displays a high level of self-awareness, acknowledging their strengths and weaknesses, and embracing vulnerability as a strength rather than a weakness.

One of the key aspects of authentic leadership is the ability to inspire trust and build strong relationships with team members. By promoting open communication and empathy, authentic leaders create a supportive environment. This is always easy when you first focus on being the best that you are.

Every leader needs to understand the value of communication. It’s important at times to almost over-communicate. You have to constantly be relaying the focus on your vision, values, and long-term goals. This focus brings several benefits to your team. These benefits in communicating with your team bring things like, clarity of direction, consistency, and building resilience in your team members.

What is the most important thing to focus on?

By a leader communicating and staying focused on the vision, there is a sense of purpose and determination that ripples throughout the team, department, and organization. As you may be embarking on your leadership journey, remember that authenticity is not a quality reserved for a chosen few. Authenticity is attainable for all leaders willing to be true to themselves and their values. Embrace authenticity, and watch as it transforms your leadership and the organization’s culture for the better.
