Train Your Mind, Transform Your Leadership

What if the biggest thing holding you back as a leader isn’t your strategy… but your identity?

That was one of the most powerful themes from my recent conversation on The Leadership Toolkit with Frank Szymanski. After more than 20 years as a juvenile court judge, Frank has seen what most of us never will. He’s sat across from individuals and families navigating trauma, poor decisions, and incredibly difficult circumstances. And through all of it, he uncovered something that applies directly to leadership, business, and life.

Most people are not lacking knowledge.
They are lacking clarity in who they are.

And that changes everything.

Leadership Starts With Identity

We spend a lot of time trying to fix external problems. Better strategy. Better systems. Better communication. Those things matter, but they are not where leadership begins.

Leadership begins internally.

If you don’t have a clear sense of identity, you will constantly find yourself reacting instead of leading. You’ll shift based on circumstances. You’ll second-guess decisions. You’ll chase outcomes without ever addressing the root cause.

Frank challenged listeners to define themselves with a simple but powerful exercise. Create a one-sentence identity statement. Not a job title. Not a goal. A definition of who you are at your core.

When you do that, something changes. You now have a filter. Decisions become clearer. Priorities sharpen. You begin to lead with intention instead of emotion.

Stop Playing “Blame Ball”

One of the most practical and memorable concepts from the conversation was something Frank calls “Blame Ball.”

Think about any sport. If you don’t control the ball, you don’t control the game.

The same is true in life and leadership.

Every time you blame someone else for your situation, your results, or your challenges, you are handing over control. You are saying that your outcome is dependent on someone else.

That is not leadership.

Ownership is.

Responsibility is not a burden. It is a superpower. The moment you take full responsibility, you take back control. You shift from being reactive to being proactive. You move from waiting to acting.

And that is where growth begins.

You Don’t Need More Time. You Need More Focus.

One of the biggest excuses leaders make is that they don’t have time to work on themselves.

Frank dismantles that excuse completely.

He introduced what he calls the 7/60 Mad Minute Plan. It is exactly what it sounds like. One minute a day. Focused, intentional, consistent mental training.

One minute focused on gratitude.
One minute focused on service.
One minute focused on challenges.

It sounds simple, because it is. But it is also powerful.

We often overcomplicate growth. We think it requires massive time blocks or major life changes. In reality, transformation is built through consistency, not complexity.

If you can give one minute a day with intention, you can begin to rewire how you think, how you respond, and how you lead.

Your Attention Is Your Greatest Resource

We talk a lot about time management, but we rarely talk about attention management.

Your attention is one of the most valuable resources you have. Where your focus goes, your energy follows. What you consistently think about will shape your reality.

Frank shared a powerful insight from research. A large percentage of our thoughts are negative, and most of them are repetitive. That means many people are living in a constant loop of limiting beliefs and unproductive thinking.

That is a problem for leaders.

Because if you are not intentional with your thoughts, you will default to patterns that hold you back.

Training your mind is not optional. It is essential.

Reframe Challenges and Change Your Results

Every leader faces challenges. That is not the issue. The issue is how you interpret them.

Most people see challenges as obstacles. Something to avoid. Something that creates stress.

But what if you saw them differently?

Frank shared a simple but effective approach. When you face a challenge, remind yourself of one you have already overcome. You have done hard things before. You have figured things out. You have pushed through.

That shift changes your perspective.

Challenges are no longer threats. They become opportunities. Opportunities to grow, to stretch, and to prove to yourself what you are capable of.

Train Your Mind. Lead Your Life.

At the end of the day, leadership is not just about leading others. It is about leading yourself first.

It is about understanding who you are.
It is about taking ownership of your life.
It is about being intentional with your focus.

When you train your mind, everything else begins to follow.

Your decisions improve.
Your confidence grows.
Your leadership strengthens.

If you want to lead at a higher level, do not just work on your strategy. Work on your identity. Work on your mindset. Work on your attention.

That is where real transformation happens.
