Leadership Secrets: Lessons to Help You Thrive

  • By Mike Phillips
  • In The Leadership Toolkit

What can a hive of bees teach us about leadership? Surprisingly, a lot! In this enlightening conversation between host Mike Phillips and guest Jones Loflin, a renowned speaker, coach, and author, you’ll discover how the principles of beekeeping can unlock your leadership potential. From managing choices to embracing change, this blog explores actionable strategies to help you and your team thrive. So, grab a warm cup of coffee or lemon water and let’s dive into this buzzing topic of leadership! 🐝

Beekeeping Is the Ultimate Leadership Metaphor

Jones Loflin has spent over three decades coaching and training leaders, helping them manage choices, combat distractions, and focus on what truly matters. His latest book, “Focused as a Bee”, uses the world of bees as a metaphor for leadership. By observing the incredible productivity and structure of a beehive, Jones has created a framework to help leaders focus their time and energy intentionally. As he puts it, “Focus is the intentional direction of your time and energy toward what matters most.”

The book and its principles were inspired by Jones’s own beekeeping experiences with his daughter, Sydney, and serve as a tribute to friendship, focus, and growth. Whether you’re a seasoned leader or an emerging professional, the lessons from the hive might just change your perspective on how to manage your time and priorities.

Six Permissions for Better Leadership

According to Jones, being a great leader often requires giving yourself specific “permissions” to focus and grow. Here are the six key permissions outlined in “Focused as a Bee”:

  • Permission to Prioritize: If everything is a priority, nothing is a priority. Leaders must determine what truly matters and allocate their time accordingly.
  • Permission to Plan: Planning your day ahead can make all the difference. Whether it’s the night before or the first 10 minutes of your workday, setting clear intentions helps avoid distractions.
  • Permission to Be Unavailable: Sometimes, the best way to lead is by stepping back. Be unavailable to distractions, internal noise, and even the constant expectations of others so you can focus on deeper, high-priority tasks.
  • Permission to Recharge: Just like bees take micro naps to stay energized, leaders must also recharge physically, mentally, and emotionally to show up as their best selves.
  • Permission to Change: Growth requires pruning. Let go of old habits or processes that no longer serve you or your team’s goals to make room for innovation.
  • Permission to Be Consistent: Consistency breeds trust and success. Stick to daily routines and practices that support your objectives, even if they feel mundane.

Each of these permissions offers a unique lens through which leaders can evaluate their habits and approaches. Which one will you start practicing today?

The Leadership Mindset of a Gardener

In addition to beekeeping, Jones introduced another powerful metaphor: leading with a gardener’s mindset. A gardener is constantly growing, cultivating, pruning, and harvesting, and leaders should adopt the same approach. Here’s how:

  • Grow: Create an environment where both you and your team can thrive.
  • Cultivate: Consistently nurture your team through regular check-ins, effective communication, and well-organized meetings.
  • Prune: Identify what’s holding you back—whether it’s a habit, routine, or even excess responsibilities—and cut it out to make space for growth.
  • Harvest: Celebrate small wins, recognize progress, and focus on possibilities to keep your team motivated.

As Jones wisely said, “Where do you need to cut back so you can grow forward?” Reflecting on and answering this question can lead to transformative changes in your leadership journey.

Practical Coaching Tips for Leaders

Jones also shared some coaching strategies that leaders can use to unlock potential in their teams:

  • Create a Safe Space: Build trust by ensuring confidentiality and providing a judgment-free environment for discussions.
  • Ask Deeper Questions: Challenge your team members with thoughtful questions like, “What’s holding you back?” or “What would success look like for you?” Then, allow space for them to reflect and respond.
  • Focus on Action Steps: Help individuals identify tangible next steps they can take to overcome challenges and move closer to their goals.

Great leaders are also great coaches. By using these techniques, you can inspire your team to think critically, act intentionally, and grow consistently.

Final Thoughts: What’s Your Next Step?

Leadership isn’t about juggling a million priorities or micromanaging every detail. As Jones Loflin reminds us, it’s about focusing your time and energy on what truly matters and creating an environment where others can thrive. Whether it’s giving yourself permission to recharge, pruning ineffective habits, or crafting a plan for your day, there’s always a next step you can take.

As Zig Ziglar once said, “Go as far as you can see by faith. And when you get there, you can see farther.” So, what’s your next step?
